Artist Statement
I draw my inspiration from
traditional African ceramics. These bodies of work are intended to be non-utilitarian
containers. With that purpose in mind, they are similar to functional pieces
but basically are non-utilitarian, yet aesthetically pleasing. My method of
construction is a hand building technique. They are sagger fired. Their surface
treatment is based upon the application of terra sigillata, slips and oxides
enhanced by the flame and smoking effects of the fire.
The bronze pieces reflect
the same conceptual approach as the clay work. They are non-utilitarian containers
as well. Their patina treated surface is intended to provoke a feeling of
agedness and corrosive effects.
The
prints are mostly inspired by the still life forms of the bronze and clay
vessels. The portraits reflect the individuals who have strongly inspired
me. My interest in portraits is to capture the essence and the core of the
individual’s personality.
